Pioter & Zosia of GDZIE BĄDŹ | Travel Interview

We met Pioter and Zosia in the sleepy town of Rio Lagartos, Mexico. We were staying in the same guest house, and instantly became friends. These Polish nomads have been travelling the world for just over a year. Not only did we have a lot of things in common, we were eager to learn more about their travels. Before we could ask, Pioter invited themselves to join our road trip the next day. Impressed by their comfortable people skills, that we are still working to inquire, we happily agreed.

They have created a Youtube channel documenting their travels called GDZIE BĄDŹ. They take some incredible footage with their drone, who also has his own name and personality – Dron Dżonson. Unfortunately, for us, the videos are in Polish and we can’t quite understand them. Nonetheless, they are visually entertaining.

It was a short but eventful adventure over the day and a half we were together (Read: Mexican Road Trip | Part One). We are happy to have met Pioter and Zosia and feel enlightened by the conversations that we had with them. We hope our paths cross again in the future.

Where are you from?
Hey! Or “Cześć!”, because we are from Poland. Warsaw – its capital – to be exact.

How long have you been travelling, and how much longer will you be abroad?
We took off on Oct 3rd 2016, so this November marks 13 months on the road. Our trip is slowly coming to an end though.

What inspired you to start travelling?
Fellow travellers that we met during our commando-trip to Vietnam (i.e. 4 week itinerary in 2 :-). We were amazed by how people organize their lives and have no limits in their travel. That’s when we decided to join this gang of wanderers.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced?
It was definitely quitting our nice and cozy jobs in Poland and that way entering the “phase of insecurity”.

What is your favourite and least favourite part of travelling?
Favorite part of travelling is immersing in local life like we did together in Rio Lagartos. Communicating with locals despite language barriers, enjoying their delicious snacks. Observing their everyday life. When it comes to cons, this is where we can’t agree. Zosia says “packing”, Pioter says “going back to the boring, normal life”.

How do you make it work financially? (ie. did you save for the trip, are you working? living on a budget, etc?)
It’s actually living on a budget both during travels and in Poland. At home we ourselves did the things most people outsource. Limiting the entertainment bill is also a big part of saving.

What is your favourite place you have travelled to and why?
It’s definitely Vanuatu for its culture and customs, end-of-the-world feel, delicious and inattractive fruit and veggies and, most importantly, its black heart beating on Tanna and exploding every few minutes (Mt Yasur, world’s most accessible active volcano).

What do you think the biggest misconception is about travelling?
That you need to have a lot of money to travel. But you can travel moneyless or earn while away. All you need to travel, actually, is.. balls.

If you could recommend one book to a friend, what would it be?
That would be “The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared”. Great read.

If you could give one piece of advice to someone who wants to travel, what would it be?
Happiness is only real when shared, so this comes with a quote from Hemingway’s “Moveable Feast”: NEVER GO ON TRIPS WITH ANYONE YOU DO NOT LOVE.
