Laos | A Photo Blog

It’s been a couple years since I travelled Southeast Asia and I am just now sorting through all the photos (that I took with a beginner DSLR on Auto, in JPEG, before I knew anything about photography). It’s been fun to look through them again and dig out my old journals and reminisce. I’ve tried my best to summarize our experience in Laos with a few words and photos. Enjoy.

From cheap massages, bike rides and temple visits. To meeting a opium smoking traveller named Meechka, who helped score us some pot, in the quiet town of NamTha.

To Mekong BBQs, night markets and even later night bowling. To hanging out with monks by the fire at 5am, in upscale Luang Prabang, and learning about the monk lifestyle.

To waterfalls, a bear rescue centre and floating the infamous river. To getting pulled into the party lifestyle of Vang Vieng and almost missing our hot air balloon ride.

To history lessons, Buddha Park and volleyball games with a group of Philippino ladies. To asking strangers, in bustling Vientiane, where we can get tattoos and thinking for a minute that we might have been kidnapped (a story on its own), hanging out with the staff of a restaurant after closing for food and drinks in a back alley and riding on the back of scooters in the middle of the night.

I write: “It is hard not to respect and almost feel envious of the Lao People – they work so hard, don’t have much, and yet are the happiest people you will meet”
